Northern Health and the First Nations Health Authority have issued an overdose alert for Prince George after a rise in overdose incidents. People have reported experiencing heavy sedation and requiring more naloxone to reverse the effects. Overdoses are occurring from both smoked and injected substances.
Health authorities are urging residents to take extra caution. They recommend carrying naloxone, never using substances alone, and knowing one’s tolerance. For those who do plan to use alone, the Lifeguard app or the National Overdose Response Service (NORS) at 1-888-688-6677 are available to provide support.
Residents are also encouraged to use Overdose Prevention Sites (OPS) if possible, and to access drug checking services where available. In Prince George, two OPS locations are providing harm reduction services. The Prince George Needle Exchange, located at 277 George Street, is open daily from 8:15 am to 12 pm and 1:15 pm to 6:30 pm. For more information, call 250-645-3810. Two Doors Down, at 1126 3rd Avenue, is open Tuesday to Saturday from 8 am to 1 pm and 5 pm to 9 pm. Drug checking is available there from 12 pm to 4 pm, Tuesday to Saturday.
If you or someone you know overdoses, call 9-1-1 immediately. This alert remains in effect until October 1, 2025.
