The Ksi Lisims LNG project has been granted an environmental assessment certificate by the provincial government of British Columbia. The project, a joint venture between Nisga’a Nation, Rockies LNG, and Western LNG, will involve the construction of two floating LNG facilities at Pearse Island in northwestern B.C. The project is expected to generate up to 450 construction jobs and 250 permanent positions.
This approval follows a detailed environmental assessment led by the B.C. Environmental Assessment Office, which included consultations with technical experts, local governments, First Nations, and the public. The provincial ministers have imposed 23 legally enforceable conditions, including plans to manage greenhouse gas emissions, wildlife protection, and workforce safety.
While some First Nations have given their consent, others have expressed concerns, particularly regarding the impacts of marine shipping. Federal approval is still required, with provincial ministers urging Ottawa to consider B.C.’s recommended mitigation measures. If federal approval is granted, the project could proceed soon.
