The BC NDP is delivering affordable homes to communities across the province, with a plan to build 300,000 more homes over the next ten years. Since 2017, the government has already built more than 93,600 homes, with more in the works.
This week, the province announced new housing projects, including 400 affordable homes in Metro Vancouver, nearly 100 in Maple Ridge, and 35 in Quesnel. The government is also investing $400 million to acquire land near transit hubs, making it easier to build homes where they’re needed most.
In addition, the NDP has implemented policies such as the Speculation Tax, which has turned over 20,000 empty condos into long-term homes, and reined in short-term rentals, freeing up thousands of units for residents. Experts predict these changes could lead to more than 130,000 small-scale multi-unit homes being built in BC over the next decade.
Rents are already starting to come down in major cities, and nearly 21% of all new rental homes built in Canada are now being built in BC. However, BC Conservatives, under leader John Rustad, want to repeal these policies and undo much of the progress made in the last eight years.
The NDP’s housing policies have set new records in housing construction, and the government is committed to continuing to build homes that British Columbians can afford.
