Simon Fraser University has officially opened the First Peoples’ Gathering House at its Burnaby campus.
The $25-million longhouse was celebrated today with traditional ceremonies and performances from the host First Nations — Musqueam, Squamish, Tsleil-Waututh and Kwikwetlem
The 15-thousand-square-foot building will serve as a cultural home for more than 900 Indigenous students, along with faculty, staff and community members. It features a Great Hall that can hold 300 people, with house posts carved by each of the host nations.
Chris Syeta’xtn Lewis, SFU’s Indigenous executive lead, says the opening is the result of decades of advocacy and will give students a safe space to connect with their culture and community.
Funding came from the Province, SFU, and the City of Burnaby.
University president Joy Johnson says the Gathering House marks a milestone in SFU’s commitment to Truth and Reconciliation — but adds the work is far from over.
