This evening (September 10) the ‘Unsighted’ Stone Mask will be on display at the Crest Hotel in Prince Rupert. The viewing will take place from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., and Gitxaała Nation members are invited to experience this significant cultural artifact.
The ‘Unsighted’ Stone Mask is one of a pair crafted from soapstone and adorned with red and green pigments, was collected in 1879 by Israel Wood Powell, with the second mask featuring an open eye, while the “unsighted” mask has a closed eye. These masks were traditionally used in ceremonial dances, symbolizing the transformation between states of vision and blindness, representing deeper spiritual meanings in Gitxaała culture. The masks are believed to have been crafted to convey spiritual and physical power through their symbolic design.
This artifact is deeply important to the Gitxaała Nation, offering a direct link to their cultural history. The return of the mask is a part of efforts to reconnect with these valuable cultural treasures and to preserve them for future generations.
The event at the Crest Hotel presents a unique opportunity for the community to engage with their heritage, and Gitxaała members are encouraged to attend and reflect on the significance of the mask. It is an important moment in the continued journey of cultural revival and preservation.
