The Esk’etemc Nation, located in the central interior of British Columbia, has issued an open letter addressing concerns over the Cariboo-Chilcotin School District’s Review of Climate and Culture – Response Plan 2025. The Nation expresses disappointment that the review did not adequately address the needs of Indigenous students. Esk’etemc leadership is calling for more involvement of Indigenous communities in the review process, as well as changes that reflect the unique challenges Indigenous students face, including racism and cultural insensitivity.
The Esk’etemc Nation is urging the district to implement a culturally relevant curriculum that includes Indigenous history, culture, and perspectives. They also advocate for stronger anti-racism education and ongoing professional development for educators and staff. Additionally, the Nation calls for more culturally appropriate mental health support for Indigenous students, with greater access to Elders and counselors.
Esk’etemc leadership emphasizes that the district must be held accountable for ensuring Indigenous students have an educational environment where they feel respected and supported. They are committed to working with the district to help shape a future that empowers Indigenous youth and addresses long-standing systemic issues.
