Search and rescue operations to find 63-year-old Edward “Lapa” Vickers, who went missing on August 29th (original story here), have officially been suspended. Vickers was last seen walking along Old Town Road in Bella Bella, and his medical condition, along with missed treatments, raised serious concerns for his well-being. An extensive search was launched, involving Bella Coola and Campbell River Search and Rescue teams, RCMP helicopter and vessel searches, and assistance from local volunteers. Despite these efforts, no new actionable information has been found, prompting the difficult decision to halt the large-scale search.
This decision was made after close consultation with Vickers’ family and is aimed at reducing further emotional strain on the community, many of whom have already endured significant physical and emotional challenges during the search. While the search operation has ended, the investigation remains active. RCMP will continue to pursue leads, follow up on any new information, and maintain communication with the family and local leaders. The RCMP also plans to explore specialized resources, including dog deployments, as new intelligence develops.
Anyone who may have seen Vickers or has information about his whereabouts is urged to contact the Bella Bella RCMP at 250-957-2388.
