The Liberal government’s announcement of a new office to “consider” approving major infrastructure projects is being criticized as more bureaucratic delay than meaningful action. Prime Minister Mark Carney’s promise to move quickly on key projects has yet to materialize, and after five months in office, the government has created yet another layer of red tape instead of delivering results.
Critics point to the fact that the Liberals have spent the last decade implementing restrictive laws and policies that have effectively blocked economic growth. While countries like the Netherlands and Germany are rapidly completing LNG terminals in under a year, Canada’s infrastructure continues to be held back by Liberal policies.
The Conservative Party says it’s time to change course. They are set to introduce the Canada Sovereignty Act this fall, which would repeal growth-stalling laws and create a more supportive environment for building infrastructure. Conservatives argue that the current government is more interested in picking winners and losers than fostering the conditions necessary for true growth. They are calling on the Liberals to follow through on their promises and deliver a real plan to get Canada working and its economy back on track.
