In a significant step toward economic development, x̄á’isla Nation’s yáqʷa Development Corporation is renovating the historic Sunrise General Store in Kitamaat Village. The project, slated for completion by late 2025, will transform the store into Gizuá Market, a space designed to meet both the traditional and contemporary needs of the community.
Since acquiring the store in 2024, yáqʷa has worked to ensure that Gizuá Market reflects the values and culture of x̄á’isla Nation. The renovations are based on community feedback, with residents expressing a desire for a market that embraces local traditions while offering convenience and variety. A new logo, designed by x̄á’isla artist Teresa Windsor, symbolizes the sun setting over Canoe Mountain, an important cultural landmark.
The project will also create new economic opportunities, including employment for store clerks and supervisors, and will help support local businesses through sales and collaborations. Gizuá Market is part of yáqʷa’s broader efforts to build a self-sufficient economy for x̄á’isla Nation, generating long-term benefits for both current and future generations. Renovations will continue through the end of 2025, with the market and restaurant space expected to open soon after.
