With the back-to-school season just around the corner, the Terrace RCMP is reminding drivers to be extra cautious as school zones come back into effect on September 2. Speed limits in school zones will be reduced to 30 km/h from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM on school days. Playground zones will have the same speed limit of 30 km/h from dawn to dusk daily.
According to ICBC, more than 350 children are injured annually in BC in crashes while walking or biking. To ensure safety, drivers must stop for school buses when their lights are flashing, and distractions, such as cell phones, should be avoided. Parents are encouraged to teach children safe street-crossing practices, including looking both ways, making eye contact with drivers, and waiting for vehicles to stop before crossing.
To reinforce these rules, the Terrace RCMP will increase their presence in school zones next week. Everyone has a role to play in keeping children safe, so let’s all remember to slow down and stay alert.
