With the Labour Day long weekend approaching, British Columbians are being reminded to stay safe and plan ahead as hot, dry conditions continue to increase wildfire risk across the province.
Open-burning prohibitions remain in effect, including full campfire bans in the Coastal, Cariboo, and Kamloops fire centres. Even where campfires are allowed, officials urge caution: never leave a fire unattended and avoid burning during windy conditions.
As of August 28, there are 78 active wildfires in B.C., with 15 classified as out of control. While there are no wildfires of note at this time, the risk remains elevated. People are encouraged to download the BC Wildfire Service app for real-time updates and report new fires by calling *5555 or 1-800-663-5555.
Residents are also urged to take FireSmart precautions—like clearing dry leaves, moving flammable materials away from buildings, and keeping lawns trimmed.
With temperatures expected to remain high, staying hydrated and knowing where local cooling centres are located is also important. Prepare for emergencies by having a grab-and-go bag, reviewing your insurance coverage, and creating a household emergency plan.
As travel increases over the weekend, check road conditions at DriveBC and ensure backcountry trips follow the three Ts: trip planning, training, and taking the essentials.
