As summer winds down and school zones get busy, BC Highway Patrol is urging drivers to focus on safety behind the wheel.
September marks Distracted Driving and Occupant Restraint Month in BC. Officers are increasing enforcement to reduce preventable injuries and fatalities on the roads.
Distracted driving is now one of the top three killers on BC roads, alongside speeding and impaired driving. Using your phone while driving—even when stopped at a light—counts as distracted driving. Even touching a mounted device more than once can result in a fine of $368.
Seatbelt use is also under scrutiny. Police say many fatal crashes in 2025 could have been avoided if victims had been properly restrained. Fines range from $109 to $167 for failing to wear a seatbelt, using an inoperative one, or not securing children properly.
BC Highway Patrol is working with partner agencies to educate the public and enforce the laws. Drivers are reminded to keep their eyes on the road and ensure everyone in the vehicle is buckled up.
With schools back in session, the message is simple: drive with care and help keep everyone safe.
