Doig River First Nation will host a national justice conference in Dawson Creek this November, bringing together legal experts, community leaders, and advocates to explore Indigenous-led justice solutions.
The event, Walking the Path of Justice: First Nations Court Conference, will run November 19–21, 2025, at the Ovintiv Events Centre.
According to organizers, the conference will focus on Indigenous law, restorative justice, and community-based approaches to addressing Canada’s justice challenges. The initiative stems from local efforts to establish an Indigenous court in Fort St. John, reflecting a push to recognize Indigenous legal systems as equal and legitimate within Canada’s broader legal framework.
Key topics will include Indigenous court structures, sentencing practices, and legal principles related to Section 35 of the Constitution, Bill C-92, and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP).
Confirmed speakers include Chief Justice Leonard Marchand Jr., the first Indigenous person to serve as Chief Justice of British Columbia, and Dr. Cindy Blackstock, a Gitxsan Nation member and prominent child welfare advocate.
Registration is free, and full event details can be found on the conference website.
