As the summer draws to a close, B.C. roads are seeing a surge in traffic. Hot weather, long weekend travel, and the start of the school year all contribute to more vehicles on the road — and more risk for roadside workers. Road Safety at Work is reminding drivers to slow down, avoid distractions, and stay alert in work zones.
In B.C., workers such as construction crews, tow truck drivers, and utility teams frequently operate near busy roads, sometimes just feet from passing traffic. In the past decade, nine roadside workers have lost their lives, and more than 260 others have been injured.
Though most drivers follow safety guidelines, there are still too many who drive too fast or fail to pay attention to road signs. In response, more safety measures are being implemented, like high-visibility gear for workers and Automated Flagger Assistance Devices.
Even if no workers appear to be present, motorists are urged to treat work zones as active areas. For more safety tips, visit RoadSafetyAtWork.ca.
