Partnership marks historic Indigenous-led investment in northern BC infrastructure
The Nisga’a Nation, Tahltan Nation Development Limited Partnership (TNDLP), and Arrow Transportation Systems Inc. have announced a strategic joint venture to acquire the Port of Stewart Bulk Terminal, a critical shipping hub for mineral exports in northwest BC.
Through the new partnership, the groups will take ownership of Stewart Bulk Terminals Limited, which operates the port. The acquisition, expected to close in the coming months, is backed by a $5 million grant from the Province of British Columbia to support the Nisga’a and Tahltan Nations’ participation.
The port, located on the Portland Canal, is a fully permitted deep-sea terminal that facilitates the transport of copper concentrate and other critical minerals from nearby mines, including Newmont’s Brucejack and Red Chris operations.
Alongside the port acquisition, Arrow Transportation will consolidate its Stewart Trucking Division with Tahltan-Arrow Transportation Limited Partnership, creating an integrated logistics business serving the region.
Leaders from both Nations emphasized the importance of Indigenous ownership in major infrastructure projects, calling the deal a milestone for reconciliation, sovereignty, and long-term prosperity.
The Port of Stewart is expected to strengthen its role as a gateway for mineral exports, create new business opportunities, and support jobs and economic growth across northern BC and beyond.
