The Province has formally responded to concerns raised by the City of Terrace regarding Pacific Northern Gas’ proposed rate increases for its West Division. The rate hike, which would affect customers from Prince Rupert to Summit Lake over the next three years, is currently being reviewed by the BC Utilities Commission (BCUC).
In a letter dated August 8, Energy Minister Adrian Dix thanked Mayor Sean Bujtas for expressing the city’s concerns. He emphasized that the BCUC, as an independent regulator, ensures rates are justified and utilities do not overcharge customers. All rate increases must be reviewed in public proceedings, and residents are encouraged to submit feedback.
To help with rising costs, Minister Dix pointed to the recent elimination of the consumer carbon tax, which took effect April 1, 2025. That change is expected to save the average PNG customer about $22 per month. Additional help may be available through the Province’s Crisis Supplement for eligible low-income residents.
The City of Terrace joins other municipalities in pushing back on the proposed increases. Their letters and community comments will form part of the public record before a final decision is made by the BCUC.
More information on the proceeding is available at www.bcuc.com.
