The District of Kitimat has launched a financial incentive program to help recruit healthcare professionals to the community.
Eligible applicants can receive up to $20,000 for filling local healthcare vacancies or joining an existing practice. The program applies retroactively from January 1, 2025, and is set to run for three years. Applications are now open, with reviews beginning on September 15.
This marks the first initiative from Kitimat’s 2024 Healthcare Professionals Attraction and Retention Strategy. The strategy, approved by Council and funded through a partnership, aims to address long-standing staffing challenges in the region.
A Health Recruitment Coordinator was hired to lead the effort and has worked closely with local healthcare providers and a new working group to develop the program. The group will continue to help guide recruitment and retention initiatives.
More supports are also in development, including training incentives, housing allowances, and welcome packages—all designed to make Kitimat a more attractive place to live and work for healthcare professionals.
