The federal NDP is calling on the Liberal government to act swiftly after China imposed additional tariffs on Canadian canola, including canola seed.
In a joint statement, NDP Agriculture Critic Gord Johns and International Trade Critic Heather McPherson said the move deepens an already serious crisis for Canadian farmers. Existing tariffs on canola oil and meal have had a significant impact, particularly in Saskatchewan. With seed now targeted, the pressure on farming families and the canola industry is expected to intensify.
Farmers are already facing a difficult year, with drought conditions, lower crop yields, and rising costs. The NDP says that while Canada has taken steps at the World Trade Organization, such as launching a dispute settlement process, more immediate action is needed.
They are urging the government to accelerate efforts to diversify trade and, crucially, to raise the $250,000 cap on cash advances under the Advance Payments Program—something they say would provide much-needed financial relief.
The NDP criticized both the Liberals and Conservatives for failing to stand with Canadian farmers in past trade disputes and said more meaningful support is urgently required to help producers weather this new challenge.
