The Gitanmaax Band is stepping up safety efforts in the Birch Grove area after receiving several reports of suspicious and possibly illegal activity. Concerns from residents include late-night traffic, individuals who appear intoxicated, increased theft, and chemical smells that may indicate dangerous activity. There are also growing fears about the safety of children and families in the area.
In response, the Band Office is increasing nighttime patrols to create a visible presence and deter unsafe behavior. It is also coordinating closely with the RCMP, sharing information and requesting targeted patrols to support community safety.
Next steps include strengthening the local Community Safety By-law to deal with repeat offenders and preparing a Band Council Resolution to formally request enforcement support from the RCMP. Leaders are also exploring legal options available under the Indian Act to protect the community.
Community members are encouraged to report suspicious activity to the RCMP at 250-842-5244 or 911 in emergencies. Non-emergency reports can be shared with the Band Office by phone at 250-842-5297 or by emailing info@gitanmaax.com. The Band also urges residents not to confront suspicious individuals for their own safety.
The Gitanmaax Band says the well-being of all community members—especially children and Elders—remains a top priority.
