Work is progressing on the next phase of the Cycle 16 Multi-Use Path, a safe active-transportation route planned along Highway 16 between Smithers and Telkwa.
The Ministry of Transportation and Transit has begun construction on Section 3 of the project — a 3.25-kilometre stretch from Telkwa’s municipal boundary toward Smithers. The $1.7-million contract was awarded to West Horizon Contracting.
Once complete, the path will link existing networks in the two communities, giving pedestrians, cyclists, and other non-motorized users a safer option along the busy corridor. It will also promote active transportation, encourage healthy lifestyles, and increase recreational opportunities for local residents.
The Cycle 16 project began as a grassroots effort by the not-for-profit Cycle 16 Trail Society, with support from the Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako, the Town of Smithers, the Village of Telkwa, and the Province.
Section 3 is expected to be completed in 2026. The path is being built in collaboration on the ancestral territory of the Wet’suwet’en First Nation.
