On August 21st, two Wet’suwet’en Chiefs from the Likhts’amisyu Clan will be back in court for a second Motion to Strike hearing. This case, which began in 2020, challenges Canada’s failure to uphold its climate commitments, claiming it violates the Chiefs’ Charter rights to life, liberty, and security.
Despite winning an appeal in 2023, allowing the Chiefs to amend their Statement of Claim, Canada is now attempting to dismiss the case again through a second Motion to Strike. This legal battle aims to hold the government accountable for climate change, which has already impacted Wet’suwet’en lands and culture, including wildfires and other environmental threats.
In solidarity with the Chiefs, RAVEN (Respecting Aboriginal Values and Environmental Needs) staff and supporters are hosting an event on August 20th, the night before the hearing, at the Vancouver Unitarians (949 W 49th Ave) from 7 PM to 9 PM. The event will feature talks by legal experts and representatives, followed by poster-making.
For those who can’t attend, the event will be livestreamed from 7 PM to 8 PM PT. Join RAVEN virtually or in person as they demand climate accountability and stand with Wet’suwet’en leadership in their fight for justice.
