The Province of British Columbia, in collaboration with the BC Green Caucus, has unveiled the first of two reports assessing the state of B.C.’s primary care system. The report highlights the significant strides made since the launch of the Primary Care Strategy in 2018. Notably, nearly 750,000 people in B.C. have been connected to a primary care provider, and as of June 2025, 76% of residents now have a longitudinal primary care provider.
The report also highlights ongoing investments, with over $672 million committed for 2025-26 to support initiatives such as primary care networks, urgent and primary care centres, community health centres, and First Nations primary care centres. This builds on $579 million invested in the previous year.
While progress has been made, the report acknowledges that challenges remain. A second report, slated for release in fall 2025, will explore the barriers to expanding services, particularly focusing on community health centres. The goal is to refine the approach and ensure future investments and policy adjustments lead to stronger, more accessible primary care for all British Columbians.
