Construction of Kitimat’s new water treatment plant is advancing quickly, with significant progress made since breaking ground in March. Last week, crews completed the pouring of the main level concrete slab, and installation of underground utilities is expected to begin this month.
Starting in September, residents will see more dramatic changes as the steel building structure begins to take shape. The installation of the steel framework is slated for completion by November. While the new facility won’t be fully operational until next year, the project remains on schedule.
The upgrade will modernize Kitimat’s water treatment system, ensuring a more reliable and efficient process. One of the plant’s key objectives is to reduce the frequency of water quality advisories that occur during high-turbidity events in the Kitimat River, typically caused by spring and fall rainfall.
Once completed, the new water treatment plant will improve water quality and reduce the number of advisories, providing the community with a more consistent and safer water supply. This project marks an important step in enhancing Kitimat’s infrastructure and overall quality of life for its residents.
