A Boil Water Notice is now in effect for all of Prince Rupert until further notice, as multiple laboratory tests have detected the presence of total coliform bacteria in the drinking water.
Residents and businesses are advised to bring water to a rapid boil for at least one minute before using it for consumption, including drinking, cooking, brushing teeth, washing raw vegetables, or making ice. Bathing and laundry are considered safe without boiling.
Total coliforms are naturally occurring bacteria in the environment and are typically not harmful. However, their presence indicates an increased risk of harmful organisms that can cause intestinal illness. The City of Prince Rupert, in collaboration with Northern Health, is working to resolve the issue and lift the Boil Water Notice as soon as possible.
Public facilities are required to post Boil Water Notices near sinks or drinking fountains, and verbally inform customers about the notice.
Residents are asked to share this information with their neighbors to ensure everyone is informed. For updates and more information, the City encourages residents to subscribe to emergency alerts through the municipal app or by visiting www.princerupert.ca/emergency.
