Over the next month, the Tahltan Central Government’s Wildlife Department and Guardians will be conducting a grizzly bear collaring project in the Klappan and Spatsizi region.
Crews will be setting snares and deploying GPS-video collars on grizzly bears in the Klappan Grade, Klappan River, and Stikine River areas. This work will help the TCG gather key data on grizzly bear movements and feeding behavior in Tahltan territory.
Bears will be safely snared, immobilized, collared, and released. The team will not be working near the Iskut community and will focus on remote areas including McEwen, Eaglenest, and Little Klappan. Snares will be placed well off the grade and will be clearly marked with warning signs and trapping tape.
The Guardians ask the public to respect their work by staying away from any marked trap zones. Do not discharge or disturb a snared bear. Cameras and bait will be active in several locations.
The team will provide updates as the project progresses and will share trapsite details once they are finalized to help ensure public safety.
