British Columbia is expanding access to free adult literacy programs to help people across the province improve essential skills in reading, writing, math, and digital literacy. The provincial government is investing $3.4 million annually through the Community Adult Literacy Program to support adults, families, and Indigenous communities.
For the 2025-26 program year, running from September 1, 2025, to August 31, 2026, the program will support 96 literacy initiatives offered by 67 providers in 204 communities. This marks a 55% increase in community reach from 132 communities last year.
These literacy programs provide a variety of learning formats to meet diverse needs, including one-on-one tutoring, small group sessions, and drop-in services, available both online and in-person.
The Community Adult Literacy Program is part of the province’s broader commitment to making education more affordable and accessible. It equips learners with the skills needed to find better jobs, pursue further education, and actively participate in their communities.
By strengthening adult literacy, B.C. is building a stronger, more resilient workforce that supports the province’s growing economy and leadership in emerging industries.
