On Monday, July 28th, a woman had fallen into the Skeena River just east of the old bridge and was left clinging to a branch. The Terrace RCMP estimates she was in the water for about two hours.
RCMP say they received reports of someone in distress in the water at around 3:15PM from a concerned member of the public who said they could hear someone screaming for help from the river.
After scouring the river from a number of vantage points, the woman was spotted by an RCMP officer. Terrace Search and Rescue, the Terrace and Thornhill Fire Departments, BC EHS, and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans were all promptly called in to assist.
The Terrace SAR team was able to extract the woman from the water after some time, and she was transported to hospital for assessment. There’s been no update on her condition, and her identity has not been released.
RCMP say a number of people came forward to offer help during the rescue; offering up canoes, life jackets, and even their own boats. The Terrace RCMP said these kind gestures were much appreciated.
