Environment Canada has issued a heat warning for the Cariboo region, including Quesnel and Williams Lake, from today through Thursday. Daytime temperatures are expected to reach between 29 and 34 degrees Celsius, with overnight lows near 14 degrees. This is caused by a strong ridge of high pressure impacting the BC interior.
The heat can affect everyone but poses a higher risk to seniors, individuals living alone, those with chronic health conditions such as diabetes or heart disease, people with mental illnesses, substance use disorders, and those with limited mobility.
Residents are advised to check on family, friends, and neighbors who may be more vulnerable. Watch for early signs of heat illness such as fatigue, headache, thirst, and dark urine, which can quickly worsen.
Anyone working in the heat should take frequent breaks in cool or shaded areas. Never leave children, pets, or vulnerable people in parked vehicles.
If you feel overheated, find a cool spot like a shaded area, splash pad, or air-conditioned public building.
