The Province of British Columbia has signed a $200-million agreement with Haisla Nation to support clean energy infrastructure for the Cedar LNG project near Kitimat.
The funding will help build a 287-kilovolt transmission line, a new substation, distribution lines, and nearshore electrification. This investment ensures the facility will be powered by clean B.C. electricity, instead of natural gas, making it one of the lowest-emission LNG facilities in the world.
Cedar LNG is the first Indigenous majority-owned liquefied natural gas project in the world. It’s being developed by the Haisla Nation in partnership with Pembina Pipeline Corporation.
This provincial funding complements an additional $200 million in federal support announced earlier this year, bringing total government backing to $400 million.
The project is expected to create up to 500 jobs during peak construction and provide about 100 permanent full-time positions once operational. Cedar LNG is scheduled to go online by late 2028.
The initiative supports economic reconciliation with Indigenous communities, while also contributing to B.C.’s clean energy and climate goals.
