Hy-Tech Drilling Actively Involved in Red Chris Mine Rescue Efforts
The Smithers-based company Hy-Tech Drilling is playing a critical role in the ongoing rescue operation at Red Chris Mine, where three workers have been trapped underground since July 22. Two ground fall incidents occurred while the workers were on a non-producing project. Following the first collapse, the workers were able to reach a refuge area. However, a second fall interrupted communication with the outside world.
Hy-Tech Drilling, which signed its largest contract to date with Newmont Mining in January, is fully engaged in the operation. The company’s Critical Incident Response Team has been activated, and leadership is on-site, working closely with Newmont and emergency responders to bring the workers to safety. The company is also in direct contact with the families of the trapped workers, providing support and updates as they become available.
Newmont Mining, which owns Red Chris, confirmed that the workers are sheltering in a MineARC refuge chamber designed to hold up to 16 people. Specialized drones are being used to assess the underground conditions, while a robotic scoop has been brought in to clear debris and restore access.
Production at the mine has been halted to focus all resources on the rescue. The workers, two from B.C. and one from Ontario, are safe in the refuge area, which is well-ventilated and equipped with food and water. The rescue operation continues around the clock, with the goal of bringing the miners home safely.
