A heat warning is in effect for inland sections of British Columbia’s North and Central Coast, including Terrace, Kitimat, and Bella Coola. Environment Canada reports temperatures nearing 30 degrees Celsius during the day and overnight lows around 13 to 15 degrees. The heat is expected to persist through Tuesday night, then drop to more typical levels by Wednesday.
This kind of sustained heat can pose health risks, particularly for seniors, people living alone, and those with pre-existing medical conditions such as heart or respiratory issues. Heat-related symptoms can include excessive sweating, skin rashes, fainting, and increased complications from existing conditions.
Officials recommend staying in a cool environment, using air conditioning if available, drawing curtains to block the sun, and keeping hydrated. Fans may help circulate air but are not sufficient to prevent heat illness, especially in vulnerable individuals.
Residents are also encouraged to check in on neighbours and family members who may need support.
More information on how to stay safe during extreme heat is available at healthlinkbc.ca, or by calling 8-1-1 for advice.
Environment Canada continues to monitor conditions and may update warnings as needed.
