The Town of Smithers has announced the acquisition of the property at 3761 3rd Avenue, the current location of Heartstrings Home Decor & Gifts, which will soon become the new home of the Smithers Public Library. This move is part of a larger effort to expand local infrastructure and provide more space for community engagement. The project is funded through the Northwest B.C. Regional Funding Agreement, a $250 million initiative, and a generous $500,000 contribution from the Friends of the Smithers Library.
The new library will offer over twice the space of the current facility, allowing for expanded services, resources, and community programs. Public consultations will shape how the additional space will be used, ensuring it meets the needs of residents.
Heartstrings, a local business that has been a staple of the community for over two decades, will continue to operate and relocate to a smaller location at 1207 Main Street in 2026. The Town of Smithers is grateful to the Heartstrings owners for their support in the transition.
Mayor Gladys Atrill expressed excitement about the project, highlighting its alignment with the town’s priorities to invest in infrastructure, education, and community well-being. Renovations are expected to begin in 2026.
