Two of Smithers’ local heroes are preparing to ride for a cause that touches nearly every family—childhood cancer.
RCMP Constable Justin Preston and paramedic Samuelle Simard are taking part in the 2025 Tour de North, a seven-day cycling event that spans hundreds of kilometres across Northern B.C. The ride supports the Canadian Cancer Society and helps fund Camp Goodtimes, a medically supervised summer camp for children and teens affected by cancer.
Constable Preston, now in his second year with the tour, says his motivation comes from the friends and family he’s lost to cancer—and from those still in the fight. Simard says she rides for the kids, adding that every child deserves to spend their summer outside on bikes, not in hospital beds.
Both riders will be at the Smithers Main Street Market on July 19 to connect with the community and raise awareness about the Tour de North.
Funds raised help support pediatric cancer research and send over 600 young people to Camp Goodtimes each year.
