A tragic accident on the Kitimat River has claimed the life of a Kitimat local man.
Just after 1:30 Tuesday afternoon, Kitimat RCMP were called to a report of a possible drowning near Nalbeelah Creek, off Highway 37, north of Kitimat.
Emergency crews responded quickly and located a 79-year-old Kitimat resident, who had drowned while rafting. His body was recovered with help from the BC Conservation Service, Kitimat Search and Rescue, and paramedics from the Kitimat Fire Department.
Police say the death appears to be a tragic accident. The BC Coroners Service has now taken over the investigation.
Officials are reminding the public to be cautious around fast-moving rivers like the Kitimat, where conditions can change rapidly.
