Former NHL defenseman and Smithers native Dan Hamhuis will be inducted into the BC Hockey Hall of Fame on Saturday, July 13, in Penticton. The 18-year pro and co-owner of the Prince George Cougars is being honoured for a career that included 1,148 NHL games and nine appearances for Team Canada.
Hamhuis began his journey with the Smithers A’s before joining the Prince George Cougars, where he played four seasons in the WHL. Drafted 12th overall by Nashville in 2001, he played eight seasons with the Predators, six with the Canucks, and two with Dallas.
A standout moment in his career was winning Olympic gold at Sochi 2014. He also represented Canada at multiple World Championships and the World Juniors.
Reflecting on his career, Hamhuis said, “It seems unreal looking back… I loved the game and all the people I got to share it with.”
Joining him in the Hall of Fame are fellow NHL veteran Shawn Horcoff, Mike Penny (Builder), Larry Kwong (Pioneer/Player/Builder), Ted Hargreaves (Builder), and championship teams from Richmond and Kimberley.
Hamhuis called the honour a full-circle moment and credited his family, teammates, and community for helping him achieve success.
