A fatal crash west of Smithers has claimed the life of a 70-year-old man. The incident happened just after 1:20 p.m. on Monday, July 7, on Highway 16 near Manton Road.
According to Smithers RCMP, the man was driving a GMC pickup truck towing a flat deck trailer when the vehicle left the roadway. He was the only person in the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators say there is no evidence that drugs or alcohol played a role in the collision. Emergency responders and police attended the scene, and the highway was partially closed for several hours during the investigation.
RCMP thanked a witness who stayed at the scene to help and expressed appreciation for the support of first responders.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
