The Prince George RCMP confirmed that one of the cyclists was an RCMP officer and the other was a community participant in the ‘Cops for Cancer’ campaign. Both cyclists had been struck around 9am on Monday morning while they were training together for the Tour de North.
Both riders had been taken to hospital with serious injuries with no word on their current conditions as of the morning of July 8th. The RCMP and Canadian Cancer Society have both since confirmed that they are each offering support to those affected.
The Prince George RCMP had located the vehicle involved in the hit-and-run and had taken one person into custody by the afternoon of July 7th.
As the investigation continues, the officer in charge of the Prince George RCMP, Superintendent Darin Rappel, noted that the incident sent shockwaves though the local policing community saying in part ‘Investigations such as this take on a different nuance than we typically experience.’
