Starting today, July 7th, the McLean Day Schools Settlement Corporation has begun accepting applications for the first round of funding through the McLean Legacy Fund.
The $200-million McLean Legacy Fund had been set up as part of the $1.47-billion Federal Indian Day Schools Class Action settlement. It’s intended to fund the creation of Survivor Committees and support the healing, wellness, commemoration and truth-telling work they do.
In the first round of funding, open until September this year, communities with schools that are listed in Schedule K of the Settlement Agreement can apply for up to 25-thousand dollars to establish their own Survivor Committee within their community, or they can apply for anywhere between $100,000 to $250,000 to support community programming focused on efforts recognized by the legacy funds four pillars of healing and wellness, language and culture, commemoration, and truth-telling.
The Fund itself bears the name of Garry McLean of the Lake Manitoba First Nation, who was the lead plaintiff in the Federal Indian Day Schools Class Action case but had passed away just weeks before the establishment of the legacy fund.
