Tomorrow, Lax Kw’alaams will raise a monument to honor survivors of the Miller Bay TB Hospital. The carved red cedar monument will start its journey at 8 AM from Metlakatla, reaching Rushbrook Dock in Prince Rupert by 10:35 AM, before being transported by land to the former hospital site along Highway 16.
The monument was crafted to reflect healing, strength, and endurance. It features a warrior holding a copper and spear at its peak, symbolizing the protection of the land, people, and waters. The carving also serves as a tribute to those who lost their lives at the hospital, which was once used to isolate and treat Indigenous tuberculosis patients from 1946 to 1971.
Following the raising of the monument, the community will gather at the Jim Ciccone Civic Centre for a traditional meal, songs, and dances. The monument is a step toward healing and reconciliation, acknowledging the painful legacy of the hospital and its impact on Indigenous families.
