Smithers RCMP officers are now wearing body-worn cameras (BWCs) after completing the necessary training, marking a significant step toward increased transparency and public accountability. The use of these cameras will provide a first-hand, real-time perspective of interactions, particularly in tense or complex situations, enhancing the RCMP’s ability to resolve complaints quickly and improve evidence gathering.
The initiative aims to foster stronger relationships between police and the public, ensuring better handling of complaints and more transparent police practices. The cameras will be activated during critical moments, including use-of-force incidents, arrests, and interviews with victims and witnesses. According to Acting Detachment Commander Sgt. Ryan Law, this project reflects the RCMP’s ongoing commitment to building and maintaining trust within the community.
The RCMP has posted its policy regarding body-worn video online, and members of the public are encouraged to participate in a national survey to provide feedback on the program.
