June 13 marks 35 years since Delphine Nikal, just 16 years old, went missing near Smithers, B.C. The Wet’suwet’en teen was last seen hitchhiking on Highway 16 after a day out with friends. She never made it home to Telkwa.
Delphine had been living with her uncle while her mother was in a coma following surgery. That night, she called home to say she was on her way — but vanished shortly after. A gas station worker later reported seeing her get into a red sports car, but the lead went nowhere.
Her disappearance was initially brushed off by authorities, with suggestions that she ran away — something her family has always disputed. Her case, now part of the Highway of Tears investigation under the E-PANA task force, remains unsolved.
Delphine’s family still hopes for answers. Anyone with information is asked to contact Prince George RCMP or Crime Stoppers.
