Today, June 11, Brenda Wilson told CFNR that her 75-year-old mother, Matilda Wilson, is currently walking along Highway 16 to raise awareness for her daughter Ramona’s 31-year-old unsolved murder case.
Matilda began her journey on June 9 in Prince George and, as of 10 a.m. this morning, had reached Vanderhoof. She plans to complete the walk in Smithers by June 13. The route she is walking is the same stretch of highway often referred to as the Highway of Tears — a corridor marked by decades of disappearances and murders of Indigenous women and girls.
Ramona Wilson was just 16 years old when she went missing in 1994. Her remains were found near the Smithers airport the following year. Her case remains unsolved and is part of Project E-PANA, a task force investigating cases along this highway.
Matilda’s walk is both a call for justice and a reminder that the pain of unanswered questions remains. Drivers and communities along Highway 16 are asked to be aware and support her journey as she walks in memory of her daughter and in solidarity with families still seeking answers.
