Fort St. John RCMP are urging residents to lock their vehicles after a string of thefts from unlocked cars on the night of June 9. Seven incidents were reported to police, all involving vehicles left unsecured overnight. Officers canvassed neighborhoods for surveillance footage and additional victims.
Thefts included items like wallets, credit cards, IDs, electronics, and tools—items that can lead to further crime, including fraud and identity theft. Police say even a stolen garage door opener can put a homeowner at risk for a break-in.
RCMP describe these incidents as crimes of opportunity, stressing that something as simple as locking a vehicle can make all the difference. They also remind the public that under the B.C. Motor Vehicle Act, owners can be fined $81 for leaving their vehicle unlocked and unattended.
Cpl. Rebecca Bojczuk says the consequences can go well beyond a missing item. Stolen electronics may hold irreplaceable data, and stolen ID can cause long-term damage. The RCMP are asking the public to take that extra moment to lock up—whether you’re parked at home, at work, or anywhere in between.
Protecting your vehicle protects your identity, your property, and your peace of mind.
