Environment Canada has issued a Special Air Quality Statement for Fort Nelson and the B.C. Peace River region due to the ongoing wildfire smoke. Poor air quality and reduced visibility are expected to persist for the next 24 to 48 hours, with smoke conditions potentially changing quickly throughout the day. Residents are urged to limit outdoor activities as health risks increase with the rising smoke levels.
Individuals most vulnerable to the impacts of wildfire smoke include seniors, pregnant people, young children, and those with existing health conditions. Symptoms such as eye, nose, and throat irritation, headaches, or mild cough are common, while more severe symptoms like wheezing or chest pain require immediate medical attention.
In addition to reducing time outdoors, people should keep windows and doors closed to protect indoor air quality. Using air filters in home ventilation systems or certified portable air cleaners is recommended. For outdoor activity, well-fitted respirator masks, such as N95, can reduce exposure to harmful fine particles.
Residents can stay informed with updates from EmergencyInfoBC and check the Province’s Air Quality Warnings webpage for further details.
