A ban on Category 3 open fires will come into effect across parts of the Northwest Fire Centre this Friday, June 6th, at noon.
The restriction applies to the Cassiar Fire Zone and parts of the Skeena Fire Zone, including the Old Kalum area and the Stikine portion of the Skeena Stikine Forest District.
Category 3 fires involve large or multiple piles of burning debris, long windrows, or the burning of grass and stubble over areas larger than 0.2 hectares.
Also banned are air curtain burners and carbonizers.
Violating the ban could result in fines of up to $100,000, a year in jail, or liability for firefighting costs if a wildfire is sparked.
The Northwest Fire Centre is thanking the public for helping prevent wildfires and reminds residents to report any fire activity by calling 1-800-663-5555 or *5555 on a cell.
