The racist incident helpline in BC, launched on May 30, 2024, is proving to be a vital resource for those facing racism, with nearly 94% of callers reporting their needs were met. The toll-free service, available in more than 240 languages, provides crucial support and referrals for people impacted by racism based on their ethnicity, culture, or skin color.
In its first year, the helpline received 807 calls and made over 2,300 referrals, reflecting the pressing need for such a service. On average, each caller was directed to three support services, often related to legal advice, mental health support, or community resources. Notably, the helpline has already doubled the call volume seen in California during its first year of operation.
The B.C. government has invested $2.2 million to enhance local services, helping community organizations better serve racialized communities. These investments are seen as essential in tackling systemic racism and supporting individuals who face discrimination. The Province is committed to further strengthening this network to ensure everyone in B.C. feels safe, supported, and valued.
