Dr. Deanna Nyce, a Tsimshian matriarch and former interim academic lead at the National Collaborating Centre for Indigenous Health (NCCIH), has been named a recipient of the King Charles III Coronation Medal. The award recognizes her lifelong contributions to Indigenous education, health, and public service.
Dr. Nyce credits her success to the collective support she has received throughout her career, particularly from the Nisga’a Nation. Raised by her grandmother in Kitselas, BC, she initially aimed to become a nurse but ultimately pursued a career in education. Her efforts have earned her numerous awards, including the Aboriginal Woman of Distinction Award in 2004.
Currently, Dr. Nyce is the founding President and CEO of the Wilp Wilxo’oskwhl Nisga’a Institute, a university college in the Nass Valley. She continues to play a key role in advancing Indigenous health equity across Canada. Dr. Nyce, nominated by the Senate of Canada, will accept her award at the Institute’s convocation ceremony on June 2, 2025.
