The District of Kitimat has issued a Water Quality Advisory effective Thursday, May 29, following increased turbidity in the Kitimat River. Northern Health is advising certain members of the public—specifically children, pregnant women, seniors, and people with weakened immune systems—to drink only boiled water until further notice.
While this is not a Boil Water Notice for the general public, a Water Quality Advisory means there is a moderate risk in consuming untreated water. Boiling water for at least 60 seconds is recommended before drinking, brushing teeth, or preparing food or infant formula for those at higher risk.
All public facilities are required to notify patrons of the advisory. The notice will remain in place until Northern Health confirms water quality has returned to acceptable levels and issues an update.
The District is working closely with health officials to monitor conditions and will provide more information as it becomes available.
Remember, this is a precautionary measure. Tap water is still safe for most people, but extra care is encouraged for vulnerable individuals.
