The City of Prince Rupert is extending the sidewalk closure along 2nd Avenue West to cover the full length where the Rupert Square Mall meets the sidewalk. Beginning tomorrow morning, all pedestrian and parking access along that section will be closed. The nearby crosswalk at 4th Street will also be shut down to prevent any potential traffic conflicts with the adjacent highway. Pedestrians are strongly encouraged to follow posted detour signs for their safety.
This development comes after recent infrastructure issues at Rupert Square Mall, which temporarily closed due to water intrusion linked to a leaking fire hydrant line and recent heavy rainfall. Water pressure built up beneath the surface, causing leaks in several tenant spaces. The mall was closed as a precaution while engineers and City crews carried out assessments.
The Fire Department has since confirmed there are no safety risks, allowing the mall to reopen today. The nearby bus stop at 2nd Avenue and 3rd Street remains open. Further updates will be provided as the situation evolves.
