In a landmark move for Indigenous economic development, the Kitselas First Nation has signed an Impact Management and Benefit Agreement with Ksi Lisims LNG, a proposed liquefied natural gas project in northwest British Columbia. The agreement outlines how Kitselas citizens will share in the long-term benefits of the project, including economic opportunities, community programs, and targeted investments.
One of the first initiatives will fund expanded childcare services, a key priority identified by the Kitselas community. The goal is to improve quality of life while supporting employment and training opportunities tied to the LNG project.
This is the first agreement of its kind for Ksi Lisims LNG and represents a shift toward stronger Indigenous participation in major resource projects. The Kitselas deal builds on a growing trend across the region, where First Nations are taking on leadership roles to ensure development projects align with their values and long-term goals.
Ksi Lisims LNG, backed by the Nisga’a Nation, WesternLNG, and Rockies LNG, is designed to be one of the lowest-emission natural gas facilities in the world. The project is rooted in environmental responsibility and Indigenous partnership, positioning communities like Kitselas at the forefront of Canada’s evolving energy economy.
